In brief: Bolivia’s hydrocarbons sector bounces back

* Bolivia’s national statistics institute (INE) has published its global index of economic activity (Igae) for the hydrocarbons sector, which grew by 14.8% from January-June 2021 compared with the same period in 2020. This represents a recovery from the 8.9% contraction that the sector suffered in January-June 2020, when the introduction of coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions slashed demand for fossil fuels in Bolivia and around the world. The INE notes that the natural gas sector is recovering faster than Bolivia’s oil industry, with natural gas extraction increasing by 17.9% year-on-year in the first six months of 2021, and oil extraction by 10%.
