In brief: Uruguay’s Lacalle Pou meets US investors

* Uruguay’s President Luis Lacalle Pou has reiterated Uruguay’s intentions of “opening up to the world” in a meeting in New York with representatives from investment funds and private capital. Accompanied by his Economy Minister Azucena Arbeleche and Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo he highlighted the importance of freedom as “a guiding principle of government policies” and emphasised Uruguay’s place as a “bastion of institutional, political and social stability in an agitated world”. He commended Uruguay for having one of the most stable democracies in both Latin America and the world, highlighting that over the past 35 years Uruguay has experienced a rotation of parties in government with orderly transitions which have not “affected economic stability, judicial independence or respect for contracts”. He further described Uruguay as “a serious, predictable country with a high level of transparency” and invited “the participants to invest, save, live [and] work…in Uruguay”. President Lacalle Pou is in the US for the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
