In brief: Mexico promotes tourism in US

* Mexico’s tourism minister, Miguel Torruco Marqués, has embarked upon a two-day visit to the US to promote Mexico as a tourist destination, an initiative known as ‘Operación Toca Puertas’ (operation knock on doors). Torruco’s tour focuses on California, the US state from which Mexico receives the most tourists, where he is due to meet with Mexico’s consul general in Los Angeles, leaders of the US-Mexican community in California, tour operators, and representatives from the travel industry. Torruco has notably presented the ‘Reencuentro mis raizes’ (I rediscover my roots) programme to the local US-Mexican community, a programme which the tourism ministry (Sectur) describes as a “strategy aimed at increasing the flow of tourists, foreign currency, and investments from the Mexican-American population”. This renewed push to promote tourism comes as the latest figures from the national statistics institute (Inegi) show that the number of international tourists who entered Mexico rose 143.7% year-on-year in July, but remains below July 2019 levels, before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic disrupted travel and tourism.
