In brief: Mexico’s López Obrador reacts to UK interest in USMCA

* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has confirmed that the UK has expressed an interest in joining the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade, as the British government seeks new bilateral trade deals following the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU). In response to a question regarding press reports on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s recent expression of interest in USMCA, put to López Obrador during his morning press conference, the Mexican president said that the possibility of the UK joining USMCA would have to be jointly discussed by the agreement’s three signatories. “We have to see this with all the actors, we can’t get ahead of ourselves. I’m in favour of maintaining the agreement, I think it was a very important victory”, López Obrador said.
