In brief: Mexico’s unemployment rate falls

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the results from its latest national employment survey (Enoe) which show that the unemployment rate reached 4.3% in August, corresponding to 2.5m people being unemployed. This is a 0.1 percentage point decrease on July and down from the 5.3% unemployment rate recorded in August 2020 amid stronger impacts from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The Enoe also shows that Mexico’s economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – has grown by 5.2m compared with August 2020 and totalled 58.2m in August this year, equivalent to 59.4% of the overall population aged 15 and over. Meanwhile, the underemployment rate fell to 13% in August from 16.9% in August 2020.
