In brief: Honduras’ GDP posts solid growth in Q2

* Honduras’ central bank (BCH) has released new figures which show the country’s GDP grew 2.9% in the second quarter of 2021 compared with the previous quarter. In annual terms Honduras’ GDP grew 25.5% in Q2 2021 compared with the same quarter in 2020, when it registered the highest fall in the country’s history due to the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Growth in the second quarter was driven by electricity & distribution of water which was up 10.8% compared with the previous quarter; financial intermediation (10.2%); and agriculture, livestock, forestry & fishing (6.2%). Honduras’ economy contracted 9% in 2020. The latest (August 2021) forecast by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac) expects that Honduras’ GDP will grow by 5% in 2021.
