MEXICO: Few solutions to new migrant surge

In early September new caravans of migrants left Tapachula municipality in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, in an attempt to transit north through Mexico and eventually to gain entry into the US. Many were violently dispersed by the national guard (GN) and forced back to Guatemala. Meanwhile at the Mexico-US border to the north, thousands of undocumented migrants were being apprehended and processed for eventual deportation. Both US president Joe Biden and his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, claim to be seeking more humane policies, but activist groups do not expect things to get better.
