PANAMA/COLOMBIA: Tackling the migration crisis

On 11 August Panama’s foreign minister Erika Mouynes hosted what she described as an unprecedented (virtual) meeting to discuss migration, involving foreign ministers from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, and Mexico as well as Peru’s deputy foreign minister and high-level representatives from Canada and the US. The meeting highlights the latest concern on the part of the Panamanian authorities about the situation of irregular migration involving those making the perilous journey through the Darién Gap, a roadless expanse of jungle on Panama’s eastern border with Colombia.
