BRAZIL: Bolsonaro in election mode

President Jair Bolsonaro’s decision to celebrate his 1,000 days in government smacked of electioneering, as he faces falling public support and his government struggles to get its reforms through congress. An official ceremony was held in Brasília to mark the occasion on 27 September, tout the Bolsonaro government’s supposed achievements over this period, and launch a new credit programme for low-income Brazilians, ‘Crédito Caixa Tem’. Bolsonaro is following this up with a ‘1,000 Days of Government’ tour of Brazil’s five regions, during which he is unveiling completed infrastructure projects – an indirect form of campaigning.
