In brief: Unemployment down in Colombia
* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has published employment figures for August, which show that the unemployment rate for that month stood at 12.3% (3.1m people). This represents a year-on-year reduction of 4.5 percentage points, which Dane director Juan Daniel Oviedo said equates to an additional 914,000 people in work. In monthly terms, unemployment fell by two percentage points compared to July. However, Dane highlighted a gender divide within the employment rebound, with the female unemployment rate standing at 16.4% in August, compared to the male rate of 9.4%. Oviedo cautioned that the employment rate is yet to recover to pre-coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic levels, with 375,000 more people out of work this August than in August 2019.
