In brief: Guatemala seeks trade agreement with Turkey

* Guatemala’s deputy economy minister for investment and competition, Lisardo Bolaños, has said that Guatemala is seeking a new partial trade agreement with Turkey. He made his comments following a recent visit to Turkey as part of efforts to boost investment and trade ties. During his visit he met Turkey’s minister and deputy minister of industry and technology, Mustafa Varank and Mehmet Fatih Kacırel, respectively, as well as representatives from Turkey’s association of exporters to discuss which Guatemalan products might have potential in the domestic market. According to Guatemala’s foreign ministry (Minex) figures, Guatemala’s exports to Turkey in the first quarter of 2021 totalled US$5.4m, up 59.09% on the same quarter in 2020.
