ECUADOR: Lasso feels the heat over Pandora Papers

The pressure is mounting on Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso, who, alongside Chile’s Sebastián Piñera and the Dominican Republic’s Luis Abinader, was one of three serving Latin American heads of state named in the ‘Pandora Papers’ exposé by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). Lasso maintains that his use of offshore accounts was legal, and on 12 October he released details on his tax payments from 2005-2020 in an attempt to put the issue to bed. That is wishful thinking. The opposition has already opened a congressional inquiry to determine whether Lasso committed any crime.
