BOLIVIA: Government and opposition stage rival protests

Bolivia saw large demonstrations both for and against President Luis Arce’s Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government this week, as opposition-led protests on 11 October were followed the next day by a show of support for MAS. The opposition’s anger stems from a financial crimes bill backed by the government, which critics claim will facilitate politicised prosecutions of Arce’s opponents. The government, meanwhile, accuses the opposition of deliberately misleading the public about the bill in an effort to destabilise the Arce administration.
