ARGENTINA: Push and pull over budget

The Argentine government’s draft budget for 2022 is facing strong pressure in opposing directions. Economy Minister Martín Guzmán has drafted it on the assumption that the country will need to narrow the fiscal deficit as part of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). But lobby groups within the government are demanding that he ignore the IMF austerity if necessary and concentrate instead on higher social spending.
