In brief: Argentina’s inflation picks up pace

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest figures for the consumer price index (IPC), which show that inflation grew 3.5% in September compared with August. This is up from 2.5% monthly inflation in August and marks a new acceleration after five months of slowing inflation, and brings annual inflation in the 12 months to September to 52.5%. The clothing and alcoholic drinks & tobacco categories saw the highest monthly increase in prices (6.0% and 5.9%, respectively), but the 2.9% inflation in the food & non-alcoholic drinks category weighed most heavily on overall inflation in September. Private sector analysts surveyed by the central bank (BCRA) expect inflation to close the year at 48.2%, although their forecast of 2.8% inflation for September fell well short of reality.
