* Guatemala’s central bank (Banguat) has released the latest figures on foreign trade, which show that exports in the first eight months of 2021 totalled US$8.9bn, up 21.6% on the value of exports recorded over the same period a year earlier. Guatemala’s principal exports by value are clothing items (accounting for 11.3% of the total); coffee (8.6%); and bananas (6.1%). Its principal export markets are the rest of Central America (accounting for US$2.86bn worth of exports, or 32.1%); the US (31.6%); the Eurozone (9.0%); Mexico (4.4%); and China (2.7%). Meanwhile, Guatemala’s imports this year to August totalled US$16.61bn (up 43.5% on a year earlier), leaving the country with a US$7.71bn trade deficit.
