Uruguay’s plans to move forward with pursuing a free-trade agreement (FTA) with China, a pipedream of successive Uruguayan governments. An FTA with its top commercial partner would certainly be beneficial to Uruguayan trade, however the issue risks sparking tensions with fellow members of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc, as current Mercosur rules prevent members from unilaterally pursuing FTAs.
