HAITI: Audacious kidnapping throws spotlight on lawlessness

Even by recent standards in Haiti, where the increase in violence by armed gangs has been described as a “descent into hell” by the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince, the brazen abduction this week of a group of 17 foreigners - North American missionaries and their relatives - caused shock if not disbelief. A surge in kidnapping, and in particular the practice of collective kidnapping, by armed gangs in the Haitian capital in 2021 had piled pressure on the government led by President Jovenel Moïse, but since his assassination on 7 July abductions have soared to new heights, earning Haiti the unwanted tag of kidnapping capital of the world.
