EL SALVADOR: Bukele downplays demonstrations

Despite the political polarisation that has prevailed in El Salvador since the end of the civil war (1980-1992), demonstrations directed at heads of state in that time have been scarce. No longer. Disparate groups of protesters united to stage demonstrations against President Nayib Bukele this week. Bukele dismissed the demonstrations as the inevitable discontent of interest groups he has upset in his bid to govern for the people, but the diversity of the participating actors belies that claim.
