In brief: Mexico’s trade deficit edges down

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released its latest foreign trade figures which show that the country recorded a US$2.4bn trade deficit in September. This is down from a deficit of US$3.9bn in August and US$4bn in July, but compares with a US$4.4bn surplus in September 2020. Overall, Mexico’s trade flows expanded: exports grew 8.2% year-on-year in September to US$41.68bn while the country’s imports jumped 29.1% to US$44bn. The latest figures bring the trade deficit for the first nine months of 2021 to US$9.27bn, with exports totalling US$359bn (up 22.2% on the same period in 2020) and imports totalling US$368bn (up 33.8%).
