NICARAGUA: Crackdown claims more prominent figures

The crackdown by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega on its opponents is continuing ahead of the 7 November general elections. In an apparent act of defiance following a recent Organization of American States (OAS) resolution demanding the immediate release of political prisoners and expressing alarm about the election [WR-21-42], authorities have since arrested the president and vice president of the country’s most influential umbrella business group, Consejo Superior de la Empresa Privada (Cosep), Michael Healy and Alvaro Vargas.
