CHILE: Anti-migrant sentiment raises red flags

A flare-up in anti-migrant sentiment and xenophobic behaviour in the north of Chile has prompted a slew of criticism from human rights organisations. President Sebastián Piñera has condemned the attacks on migrants but continues to stand by his mantra of “putting the house in order”. The Piñera government’s tough line on migration has not, however, stemmed a growing flow of irregular migration to Chile and is criticised by civil society groups.
