HONDURAS: More setbacks in tackling corruption

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), along with local civil society groups, have blasted a series of reforms to Honduras’ criminal code, criminal procedural code, and anti-money laundering legislation, recently approved by the 128-member unicameral legislature. The changes are likely to exacerbate existing concerns about corruption under the current government led by President Juan Orlando Hernández – the main voter complaint ahead of the 28 November general elections. These concerns have intensified since the departure in January 2020 of the Organization of American States (OAS)-sponsored Mission to Support the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (Maccih) [SSR-20-03] and have been exacerbated by issues such as the drug-related allegations involving President Hernández [SSR-20-05].
