In brief: Transport workers call off strike in Panama

*Abel Ovando, the president of Panama’s transport lobby Cámara Nacional de Transporte de Panamá (Canatra), has told reporters that the lobby has called off a strike which was due to take place today (8 November) over high fuel prices. He said that the decision was taken after reaching an agreement with the government led by President Laurentino Cortizo regarding various measures, including the government’s approval of a temporary fuel subsidy until the end of the year which the local media has put at some US$3m. On 5 November Panama’s national energy secretariat, the government body responsible for implementing energy policies, most recently increased the price of gasoline with a 95 octane rating to US$0.99 in the provinces of Panamá and Colón, while the price per litre of gasoline with a 91 octane rating would rise to US$0.97 per litre, with prices set to be higher elsewhere in the country.
