In brief: Economists flag up informality concerns in Guatemala

* A group of Guatemalan economists have highlighted the need to address informality in Guatemala, among other concerns about the job market. At a forum hosted by the Guatemala-based Central American Institute of Fiscal Studies (Icefi) think tank and Costa Rican research centre Programa Estado de la Nación (PEN), Abelardo Medina, a local economist with Icefi, pointed out that informal workers make up 80% of the work force. Meanwhile, Icefi’s executive director Jonathan Menkos was cited by the media as saying that the country produces “less than 30,000 formal jobs a year, far from the country’s needs”.
