BOLIVIA: Fighting on the anniversary

On Bolivian President Luis Arce’s first anniversary in office, the honeymoon was a distant memory and his celebrations drowned out by rowdy parties in congress and protests in the streets. As he presented a report on 8 November outlining his government’s actions during its first year in power, Arce at times struggled to make himself heard over jeering opposition legislators. Meanwhile, his speech coincided with the launch of an indefinite national strike that saw roads blocked and clashes in the streets, as protesters called for the repeal of an anti-money laundering law that they say could pave the way to politicised prosecutions.
