MEXICO: Wedding claims scalp of anti-corruption czar

One of the most prominent officials in the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Santiago Nieto, tendered his resignation on 8 November after a backlash over his wedding two days earlier. Nieto, the head of Mexico’s financial intelligence unit (UIF), part of the finance ministry, was the face of López Obrador’s crusade to eradicate corruption and money laundering, a flagship campaign promise and the cornerstone of his ‘Republican austerity’ plan. Nieto resigned hours after López Obrador publicly criticised his wedding and surrounding events, which caused a traditional and social media scandal.
