In brief: Mexico’s López Obrador on the offensive over electricity reform

*Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced a national campaign to promote his controversial electricity reform which would give the state-run electricity firm, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), a pre-eminent role in the domestic market to the detriment of private renewable energy generators. His comments, made in his daily press briefing, follow declarations by members of the opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) and Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) that the reform was “dead” following the refusal by the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) to budge on aspects of the federal 2022 budget which was recently approved by the lower chamber. The constitutional reform, the debate over which Morena has said it would push back until next year, requires support from the opposition as the ruling party has insufficient votes in the legislature to push it through.
