* Guatemala’s ministry of energy and mining (MEM) has introduced a subsidy for the purchase of propane gas, which will come into force tomorrow (1 December). Consumers will receive a Q8.0 (US$1.03) discount for each 10lb of propane gas that they purchase. The subsidy seems aimed at relieving surging discontent with the government led by President Alejandro Giammattei, who in recent months has faced mass protests calling for his resignation.
