In brief: Panama Canal to introduce emissions fee

* The administrator of the Panama Canal, Ricaurte Vásquez, has announced that the Panama Canal Authority will introduce a new ‘green vessel classification’, which will include a greenhouse gas emissions fee. Speaking at the annual congress of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) in the Colombian city of Cartagena, Vásquez said that the tariff changes reflect “the urgency of climate change and the need to accelerate the industry [response] and global climate action.” He did not specify the cost of the new emissions tax, but he said it would only apply to vessels longer than 125 feet (38.1 metres) and would be calculated according to three factors: the energy efficiency design of vessels, the use of zero carbon biofuels or carbon neutral fuels, and “the use of efficient operational measures such as the use of Bow Thrusters.”
