BOLIVIA: Massive pro-government demonstration riles opposition

Massive pro-government demonstrations were held in the Bolivian capital, La Paz, on 29 November, with President Luis Arce’s administration claiming that over 1m citizens took to the streets in support of the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). The demonstrations were held at the culmination of a 180km march by MAS supporters from the town of Caracollo, in the department of Oruro, which was staged in response to nine days of opposition protests earlier in November [WR-21-45]. The latest demonstration saw flame-fanning in an already volatile political climate, with Arce warning on 30 November that “the right is regrouping” in order to carry out a “coup d’état”, and union leaders urging disruption and nationalisations in the opposition stronghold of Santa Cruz.
