Introduction

Mexico still has one of the world’s highest homicide and crime rates. The left-wing populist government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador claims credit for a recent drop in the murder rate, and there are some signs that the public thinks security may be improving. But the devil is in the detail, and the numbers are not straightforward – as we discover in the first piece in this December 2021 issue of the Latin American Regional Report: Mexico.
