In brief: Mexico and Canada united in electric vehicle dispute with US

*Mexico’s economy minister Tatiana Clouthier has met with Mary Ng, Canada’s minister of small business, export promotion and international trade, to discuss mutual concerns over the proposed tax credits for US electric vehicles (EV) in US President Joe Biden’s ‘Build Back Better’ Act. Mexico and Canada believe the proposal would violate non-discrimination clauses in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade. The minsters stated that they would continue working together to address the US interpretation of rules of origin requirements for the auto industry and stressed the importance that the US respect commitments made in the USMCA. Biden’s proposed bill hit a setback in the US senate on 19 December, with key senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) saying he would not support it.
