* Brazil’s economy ministry has released its latest figures on the country’s balance of trade, which show that Brazil saw record levels of exports, imports, and trade surplus in 2021. Brazil’s exports added up to US$280.4bn last year, while imports totalled US$219.4bn, leaving the country with a US$499.8bn balance of trade and a US$61bn trade surplus. Exports were up 34% on 2020 to an all-time record, while imports grew 38.2% year-on-year to the fifth highest figure since current records began in 1989. The secretariat of foreign trade (Secex) in the economy ministry expects exports to grow further in 2022, but overall trade to shrink. Secex predicts a 1.4% increase in exports this year and a 6.6% decrease in imports, leading to a 2.1% reduction in the overall balance of trade but a 30.1% increase in the trade surplus, to a record US$79.4bn.
