GUATEMALA: Flare-up of indigenous dispute puts Giammattei on back foot

President Alejandro Giammattei has decreed a 30-day state of siege in two indigenous municipalities in Sololá department following violent clashes which left at least 13 dead. The conservative government’s militarised response to the long-running land dispute between the municipalities of Nahualá and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán has been rejected by local residents and sectors including the indigenous opposition party Winaq.
