HONDURAS: Congressional challenge confronts Castro

The national electoral council (CNE) confirmed the final results this week of the congressional and municipal elections held on 28 November. The incoming left-wing Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) of President-elect Xiomara Castro will have 50 seats in the 128-seat national congress, according to the final legislative results published by the CNE. Libre is moving to shore up its alliance with the Partido Salvador de Honduras (PSH) of Castro’s running mate Salvador Nasralla, which won 10 seats, by backing the candidacy of one of its deputies for president of the legislature, but it will still require further consensus-building to muster a simple majority of 65.
