In brief: Maduro claims drop in poverty rate

* Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has announced that in 2021 Venezuela’s poverty rate fell from 18.4% to 17.7%, and that extreme poverty affected 4.1% of the population. These statistics were challenged by the opposition, with former national deputy José Guerra (Primero Justicia) citing a September study by the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) which found that extreme poverty hit 76.6% in 2021 – an 8.9 percentage point increase on UCAB’s findings for 2020. Guerra added that hyperinflation had caused Venezuela’s economy to contract by 75% between 2014 and 2021.
