In brief: Argentina’s Guzmán meets with IMF following further price controls

* Argentina’s economy minister, Martín Guzmán, and secretary for domestic trade, Roberto Feletti, have held a meeting with representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the ‘Precios Cuidados’ price control programme, which was expanded on 13 January to cover 1,321 products. According to a social media post by Guzmán, he and Feletti told the IMF that Precios Cuidados “constitutes an important element in the battle against the inflationary phenomenon in Argentina” and emphasised the need for “price-income policies that guarantee that real wages can rise while inflation predictions are calmed.” The meeting came ahead of Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero’s visit to the US, where he will meet tomorrow with Secretary of State Antony Blinken to push for US support for Argentina in its debt negotiations with the IMF.
