In brief: Argentina’s Fernández announces renewable energy cluster

* Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández has announced an initiative to create a “renewable energy cluster” to be developed by public and private companies in various provinces. He said that the initiative, which promotes the development, construction, and operation of renewable energy parks, would initially be launched in the provinces of San Juan, La Rioja, Neuquén, Mendoza, Catamarca, and Río Negro. He said that this will create 2,250 direct jobs and over 4,000 indirect jobs and will generate work for over 250 small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs). He also said that the initiative represents investment of some US$1bn and seeks to substitute energy imports worth around US$130m annually, permitting a reduction of 220 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
