In brief: Bolsonaro sanctions Brazil’s budget

* Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has sanctioned the 2022 budget, which plans for R$4.7trn (US$862bn) in expenditures, of which R$1.9trn are destined to servicing public debt. The budget expects a primary deficit of R$79.3bn, below earlier projections of R$170.5bn. In a written statement to the press, the secretary-general to the presidency announced yesterday (23 January) that Bolsonaro had signed off on the budget – the deadline for doing so was 21 January – with some vetoes due to the need to adjust compulsory expenditures. The exact nature of the vetoes was not revealed, however; they will be unveiled in today’s (24 January) official gazette with the publication of the sanctioned budget. There is notably speculation as to whether Bolsonaro has maintained a controversial salary increase for federal police officers.
