CHILE: Boric unveils balanced cabinet

Chile’s President-elect Gabriel Boric spent several weeks striving to create a cabinet that expressed his commitment to gender equality, regional and social diversity, and independent expertise, while apportioning the expected party-political rewards. Boric revealed the ministers that will fill his cabinet during an event in the natural history museum in Santiago on 21 January. Boric went beyond gender parity by naming a total of 14 female ministers in his 24-strong cabinet. There will be a strong youthful presence with seven of the ministers under 40. Political pragmatism ordained that he had to broaden his alliance, bringing in representatives of the traditional left, which could cause tensions with the more radical left coalition Apruebo Dignidad he leads.
