In brief: Brazil receives record oil royalties

* The Associação Nacional de Petróleo (ANP), Brazil’s federal oil & gas regulator, has revealed that the Brazilian state received a record income from oil royalties in 2021. The Brazilian federal state, state-level governments, and municipalities earned a total R$37.6bn (US$6.9bn) in standard royalties from the companies producing oil on Brazilian territory, and a further R$36.8bn in ‘special participation’ payments, an additional royalty paid on large or particularly productive fields. Overall, royalties distributed to the Brazilian government last year were up 65% on the 2020 value. ANP says the record payment of royalties can be primarily explained by the increase in the price of oil on the international market and the exchange rate.
