In brief: Mexico records 2021 trade deficit

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the latest figures on the country’s balance of trade, which show an US$11.49bn trade deficit in 2021, compared with a US$34.01bn surplus in 2020. According to Inegi, total exports in 2021 amounted to US$494.2bn, up 18.5% on 2020, while imports totalled US$505.7bn, up 32.1% on the previous year. According to the same figures, Mexico recorded a trade surplus of US$590m in December 2021, compared to a surplus of US$6.18bn in the same month of 2020.
