In brief: ECLAC report highlights pandemic’s impact on Argentina

* The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has published its ‘Social Panorama of Latin America 2021’ report, in which Argentina performed poorly on several key indicators. ECLAC noted that Argentina suffered the second highest increase in poverty from 2019-2020, with poverty rising by seven percentage points amid the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Argentina also had the fifth largest decrease in employment in the region (-6%), and the fourth largest GDP contraction (-10%). Across Latin America as a whole in 2020, poverty increased by an average of 2.5 percentage points, and GDP contracted by an average of 7.6%.
