In brief: Costa Rica to investigate offshore wind potential

*The Central American development bank (BCIE) has announced that through a US$600,000 non-reimbursable technical cooperation grant from the South Korea-BCIE Single Donor Trust Fund (KTF), Costa Rica’s state electricity firm (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad, ICE) will receive support for the development of offshore wind farms in the near future. According to a BCIE press release, this cooperation “will finance studies to identify the potential of offshore wind energy, the challenges, risks and opportunities in the development, installation, and operation of offshore wind farms in the near future.” A BCIE press release cites ICE's director of planning and sustainability, Kenneth Lobo, as saying: “With these resources, for 18 months, two teams of national and international experts will undertake the task of building the social, legal, environmental and infrastructure conditions required by the supply chain and governance of the future development of offshore wind energy in the country.” The execution of the technical cooperation is expected to start during the second quarter of 2022 and to be completed within 18 months.
