BRAZIL: Fiscal outlook uncertain despite primary surplus

Brazil’s public sector has posted a primary surplus for the first time in eight years, figures released on 31 January by the central bank (BCB) show. The government has hailed this performance as a return to “fiscal normality” after the unusual expenditures incurred as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but analysts remain wary about the future of Brazil’s fiscal health this year.
