GUATEMALA: Key minister resigns

Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei has been forced to name his fourth interior minister since taking office in January 2020 after the resignation of Gendri Reyes. The departure of Reyes, who did not provide reasons for his decision, was well received by human rights groups angered over his alleged responsibility in the repression of protesters by the national police (PNC) in November 2020. It also comes as Giammattei’s claims of progress vis-à-vis security have been questioned [WR-22-04]. Reyes’ replacement, however, has set off fresh alarm bells among these groups: David Napoléon Barrientos Girón served as the deputy chief of staff (2014-2015) of disgraced former president Otto Pérez Molina (2012-2015).
