Colombia and Ecuador citizen security laws excite controversy

Colombia’s President Iván Duque promulgated a citizen security law last week that was drafted in response to large-scale anti-government protests staged in 2021. His Ecuadorean peer Guillermo Lasso, meanwhile, is attempting to push similar legislation through the national assembly. The most contentious aspect in both Colombia and Ecuador relates to the progressive use of force by the police.
