Peru’s Castillo hanging on by a thread

Peruvians are well accustomed to a succession of political crises. But President Pedro Castillo is raising the bar, setting a new record this week. Not since the return to democracy in 1980 has any president managed to get through so many new prime ministers within six months of taking office. Castillo is now on to his third, pending approval by congress, after Mirtha Vásquez resigned in the midst of serious internal differences over the fight against corruption, which saw the interior minister, Avelino Guillén, walk out. The debacle has increased the likelihood of the congressional opposition moving to impeach Castillo. He may be granted a reprieve now, but he is unlikely to be given the chance to line up a fourth prime minister.
