Guillermo Lasso has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with his Chinese counterpart
Xi Jinping in Beijing, which affirms both countries’ aim of securing a free trade agreement (FTA) and agrees to begin conversations on renegotiating Ecuador’s debt to China. Following his meeting with President Xi, Lasso said he expects an FTA to be signed by October this year. He added that he is
“very optimistic about what we can achieve regarding debt renegotiation,” with the Lasso administration
hoping to decouple oil from Ecuador’s debt repayments to China.
